I have to be honest, when I was first asked if we were going to use cloth diapers when our son was born my first response was ‘Ew, no! Its gross to have to clean them out and wash them!’ I really shouldn’t have been so quick to judge.
I remember hearing other mothers talking about cloth diapers at our birthing class and would see different advertisements while shopping around, but I really didn’t think about using them. We started out using disposables and after thinking about it for a little while I decided to do my research and check out what cloth diapers were all about. It caught me off guard to see what they actually looked like now. I had in my mind that they were like the diapers my grandma used to use way back in the day with just a cloth and safety pins to hold it together. Boy was I wrong! There were so many to choose from and different styles depending on what you liked. You could have the ones like my grandma used or they had All-in-ones where you simply slid the cloth insert in and buttoned it up. After reading A LOT about cloth diapers and how other moms were doing it and what kind to get, I decided to give it a try. Heck, if I didn’t like it I could always go back to disposables. So, I bought a couple of the waterproof covers and some cloth inserts. I was nervous the first time I put them on my son. Was it tight enough? Is it going to leak everywhere and make a huge mess? Is he going to explode out the back? And well, nothing happened. They worked great! Besides trying to figure out when it was time to change into a fresh diaper, I really liked them.
Before, with disposables, we had quite a few disasters with explosions out the back and I had to call my husband to come in to help me undress my son and give him a bath (they were pretty bad, especially with this whole new mom thing). With the cloth diapers it has yet to happen and we have been using them for a couple months. They keep everything contained! Another thing my husband also commented on is the cloth diapers smell much better. I don’t know about you, but when my son would wear the disposable diapers you could just smell the chemicals coming from it. With the cloth diapers they smell like a ‘Clean Breeze’ or whatever detergent you choose.
I was so afraid to wash the cloth diapers at first. I wasn’t quite sure my washing machine would get them clean enough. At the time my son was still only on breast milk, and according to the instructions you could throw the whole thing in the wash, without rinsing first! And it actually worked! Then he started solid food, and that’s when I bought a sprayer and cover and they work wonders. I’m so glad I got them. It makes it so easy to simply spray out the mess. I thought it would be such a hassle to clean them all the time and spray them out, but it’s really not that bad. After I put my son to bed at night I throw them in the wash and then they are ready to go in the morning!
At this point my son has NEVER got a diaper rash, unlike when he wore the disposables. It makes me feel so much better that he doesn’t have to go through something painful like that.
Through my research of cloth diapers, I found that over 92% of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill and no one really knows how long they take to decompose, but it’s estimated to be 250-500 years. That’s long after your children, grandchildren, and great, great, great grandchildren will be gone! When looking at the cost between cloth and disposable, cloth is less than one third the cost of buying disposables. That is super important when we live off of a dairy farmer income!
In the end, the extra bonus is they are super adorable! I mean his little behind is already cute, but now it’s extra cute!
